The Internet is full of websites that offer medical information on every imaginable health condition: how can you know which ones are reliable? It is estimated that 95 million Americans (nearly 80% of people who use the Internet), go online to search for medical information and to answer health questions. There are many websites that are commercial and urge you to spend your money on products that are being promoted. Be cautious and only visit websites that are truly informational. The Medical Library Association has published a list of their top 100 medical websites that can be found at www.caphis.mlanet.org. One of the first websites recommended to visit is www.medlineplus.gov, which has been evaluated by the National Library of Medicine and offers health news, videos, a medical dictionary with illustrations, drug information, and more than 18,000 links to up-to-date and accurate medical information. Another site is www.healthlinkplus.org, which offers links to medical websites recommended by the public library of Charlotte, North Carolina. A website that offers easy to understand handouts on many common medical conditions that have been written and reviewed by doctors at the American Academy of Family Physicians, as well as healthy living guides can be found at www.familydoctor.org. The United States Department of Health and Human Services has links to information and websites from over 1,500 health organizations, as well as health newsletters and a drug interaction checker at www.healthfinder.gov. This site also has information for children. A website that offers many topics and features is www.webmd.com. A few of the websites focused on women's health include www.ourbodiesourselves.org and www.womenshealth.gov. All of the above websites have information available in Spanish. Dr. Aliza Lifshitz, known as "Doctora Aliza" on Univision, founded the website www.vidaysalud.com which collaborates with the Mayo Clinic, a highly respected medical organization to provide the most extensive medical information available in Spanish on the Internet. Use these resources wisely and remember that it is always recommended to consult a physician for examination, diagnosis, and treatment.
