FAQ on Digital Subscriptions

General Questions

What new digital products are available?

The Roanoke Times is now offering the newspaper in digital format. There are two products - the eTimes, the electronic edition of the newspaper available through most Internet browsers, and an iPad replica app. Both are exact copies of the newspaper in a familiar format, available by 6 a.m. every day.

These products are currently available to print subscribers at no additional cost as part of their subscription package.

What is the difference between these products?

Both the eTimes and the replica app are an exact copy of The Roanoke Times. Most of the features are the same between the two products but how you access them is different.

The eTimes is accessible from desktops and laptops. You can also access the eTimes from most Internet browsers on tablets and other devices; however, the download time may vary due to the processing power of some tablets.

The replica app is designed specifi cally for iPads, off ering all the content in the daily Roanoke Times print edition. The iPad application allows you to you to have the news delivered to you every day, wherever you are, and once you download the content to your iPad, it is available for offline reading.

We will make digital-only subscriptions available soon, do click here so we can notify you when these digital products are available.

How much does it cost?

Currently, the eTimes and replica app are included at no additional charge with a print subscription. We will make the products available to purchase separately soon. Click here so we can notify you when these digital products are available.

Does the app download a new print edition each day?

The app does not automatically download a new issue each day. You must download it within the app for each new edition. Downloading requires a Wi-Fi connection. Once the edition is downloaded, those pages are accessible without a Wi-Fi connection so you can take it with you and read it later, just like the printed newspaper.

Note: The pages that comprise the newspaper can be large. We strongly recommend a Wi-Fi connection for daily use so that you don't consume too much of your data plan.

Can I see previous copies of The Roanoke Times with these products?

Yes. With the eTimes and iPad app, you can access issues up to 30 days. With the replica app, the pages that comprise the newspaper can be large. We strongly recommend a Wi-Fi connection for daily use so that you don't consume too much of your data plan.

What about other tablet or mobile devices? Will the app work on those?

No, the replica app is designed specifically for the iPad. We will continue to evaluate other platforms and devices.

Technical Questions

What's the message "The newspaper didn't publish the eTimes last night" mean?

Occasionally, there are circumstances that prevent us from meeting our window of publishing the electronic edition of the newspaper (i.e. a late Virginia Tech game, election coverage, inclement weather, technical difficulties, etc.). When this happens, we have to manually publish the e-Edition. This takes a couple of hours. Please bear with us and check back again in an hour or two.

The website says that I need to "have popups enabled". What does this mean?

Each browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.) is different in the way that it manages website popup pages. You will see a message at the top of your screen asking if you want to enable popups for this website. Click on the message and respond YES.
