About this series

The team that produced "Going Down the Crooked Road" put many miles behind them in reporting this series. Beginning in May 2005, reporter Ralph Berrier Jr., photographer Kyle Green and multimedia editor Seth Gitner set out along Virginia's Heritage Music Trail, interviewing, recording and photographing the elements produced here in this multimedia series.

About the team:

Ralph Berrier Jr. grew up in the Carroll County farming community of Cana, right in the middle of mountain music territory. His grandfather and great-uncle, Clayton Hall and Saford Hall, were well-known musicians who imparted their love of music to their kin. Berrier is a features writer at The Roanoke Times, where he has worked since 1993.

Kyle Green is in his first year with The Roanoke Times. He spent four years with the Portland Tribune in Oregon and earlier interned at The Los Angeles Times and The Vancouver Columbian. The Crooked Road series is his introduction to Southwest Virginia and bluegrass music.
A still photojournalist for the preceding 10 years, Seth M. Gitner has been multimedia editor for The Roanoke Times and roanoke.com since January. His role is to help integrate multimedia news-gathering techniques into a traditional print newsroom. Seth has taught multimedia at the Poynter Institute's Visual Edge workshop. He is president of the Virginia News Photographers Association.
