The left lane of southbound Interstate 81 at mile marker 125, just south of the Ironto exit in Montgomery County, will remain closed today to clean up an early-morning tractor-trailer wreck.

The Virginia Department of Transportation estimates the lane will remain closed until at least 2 p.m.

The wreck happened around 4:30 a.m. when the driver of a southbound tractor-trailer apparently lost control of her truck and overturned on the left shoulder of the interstate, said Sgt. M.K. Brannock of the Virginia State Police. Both southbound lanes of I-81 were closed immediately and remained closed during the early-morning rush, causing a three-mile traffic backup.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and the driver of the truck was transported by helicopter to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The accident is under investigation, Brannock said, and charges are pending.
