UPDATE: Thousands in Southwest Virginia report power outages after storms [with radar]

Several thousand people are without power this evening following a line of storms that brought strong winds and heavy rain through Southwest Virginia.

About 1,897 customers reported being without power in Roanoke about 8 p.m., according to Appalachian Power. Another 1,814 were in the dark in Roanoke County, and 2,148 in Henry County.

Emergency dispatchers reported downed trees and power lines and numerous minor vehicle wrecks across the Roanoke and New River valleys.

The Roanoke Regional Airport measured .22 inches of rain from the storm, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado watch had been issued for most of Southwest Virginia, but the weather service has since lifted that alert.
