Winter storm and wind leave 10,000 homes, businesses without power

Floyd County has been particularly hard hit, but Appalachian Power Co. aims to have most power restored by late today.

High winds on top of a winter storm have left about 10,000 Appalachian Power Co. customers in Virginia and West Virginia without electricity, including about one of every three in Floyd County.

The utility is reporting 2,934 customers affected in Floyd County, most of them by trees blown onto power lines by strong winds Wednesday night.

Crews from Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee have been brought in to help restore power, Appalachian spokeswoman Jeri Matheney said.

Officials hope to have most of the problems fixed by late today, although some of the hardest-hit areas might have to wait until Friday night, Matheney said. Some 7,000 of the homes and businesses without power are in Virginia.

Other outages reported by Appalachian include 497 in Montgomery County, 234 in Roanoke County and 144 in Franklin County.
