2 Blacksburg men charged in campsite stabbings

CHRISTIANSBURG - Two brothers from Blacksburg have been charged with stabbing three men during a brawl last month in Sugar Grove.

Tommy Brumfield, 22, and Jason Brumfield, 24, were arrested Wednesday on one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of malicious wounding, all felonies, said investigator Dennis Rakes of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Both brothers were in custody Wednesday at the Montgomery County Jail. The fight broke out about 11 p.m. June 26 on property owned by one of the victims and left three men injured by knife wounds.

Gerald Krafft, younger brother Thomas Krafft and friend Dennis Gregory were camping with their families when they ran into the Brumfields, who are Thomas Krafft's acquaintances, and invited them to the campsite for a visit. The men were drinking and grew rowdy, investigators said.

Gerald Krafft asked the Brumfields to leave and, after making some threats, they did. They returned about 20 minutes later and a fight broke out, investigators said.

Gerald Krafft told deputies he was jumped from behind as he approached the Brumfields' truck and suffered a stab wound to the arm and a broken arm. Because of that, investigators brought the aggravated malicious wounding charge, Rakes said.

Thomas Krafft and Gregory jumped into the fight and were also cut. Thomas Krafft suffered a stab wound to his back, and Gregory was stabbed four times, one of which punctured his lung.

All three have since been released from Montgomery Regional Hospital, Rakes said.
