Fire closes apartment house

A Southwest Roanoke apartment house was condemned following a fire Friday afternoon, officials said.

According to Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury, crews responded about 1:10 p.m. to a report of a fire at a two-story house in the 1200 block of Patterson Avenue. When they arrived, they saw smoke coming out of the building. The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries to firefighters.

The house is divided into three apartment units, but no one was home at the time of the fire, according to a news release. The second floor, where the fire started, was damaged by smoke and fire, and the first floor was damaged by water.

The building has been condemned but a damage estimate was unavailable Friday and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
