VT, UVa students in Haiti escape unharmed
At least two New River Valley groups traveling in Haiti's central plateau were not hurt in Tuesday's earthquake -- but their relatives could learn little more as the disaster broke communication channels.
Fourteen students from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia were on a mission with Blacksburg United Methodist Church in Cange, a small town 35 miles north of Port-au-Prince.
"Personally it felt like I was about to faint or lose my footing when it happened," wrote Tech junior Michelle West in an e-mail.
It was unclear whether West's group would return Thursday, as scheduled.
Meanwhile, Wade Thomason, an assistant professor of grain crops at Tech, sent e-mails to his wife, Kim, in Blacksburg. She did not know the number of people in the group, or their precise location. The group was scheduled to return Jan. 20, she said.
"My understanding is that they are doing well," Kim Thomason said.
