Sponsors helping make Saturdays at the Taubman free
Admission to the Taubman Museum of Art will be free this Saturday, and every Saturday thereafter, assuming the museum can line up enough corporate sponsors.
Sixteen companies so far have agreed to sponsor a "Spectacular Saturday," and the museum is hunting for more. The goal is to find a sponsor for every Saturday of the year, museum spokesman Jeff Miller said.
Museum officials credit Cycle Systems Chairman Bruce Brenner with the idea. Brenner previously played a key role in bringing the Metropolitan Opera's "Live in HD" broadcasts to Virginia Western Community College.
The Taubman's board of directors also intends to sponsor a free Saturday later this month, officials said.
The free Saturdays include programming for children. Roanoke Children's Theatre will also hold performances one Saturday each month in partnership with the art museum.
