WDBJ adds new anchor Seth Kovar to morning show
With him, WDBJ has the biggest 6 a.m. team in the Roanoke-Lynchburg area.
WDBJ-TV (Channel 7) added somebody to wake up with in the mornin'.
Seth Kovar will join longtime anchorwoman Kimberly McBroom as co-anchor of "News7 Mornin,'" Channel 7's weekday morning news program starting Monday.
Kovar comes to Roanoke from Waco, Texas, where he anchored the morning and 11 p.m. newscasts at KXXV-TV. He also produced the 11 p.m. broadcast.
The addition of Kovar gives WDBJ a four-person team at 6 a.m., the biggest in the Roanoke-Lynchburg market. Meteorologist Leo Hirsbrunner and roving reporter Bob Grebe round out the "News7 Mornin'" team.
Competition for eyeballs in the morning has become an increasingly important part of local television news, said WDBJ news director Dan Dennison.
"Many stations have now recognized the critical importance of the morning block as the newscast that really kicks off the coverage tone for the entire day and, like us, have or are beefing up resources," he said in an email.
Channel 7 also produces morning newscasts on the weekend.
In the most recent Nielsen survey in July, "News7 Mornin'" and WSET's (Channel 13) "Good Morning Virginia" were tied in the ratings.
McBroom has anchored or co-anchored the morning news on Channel 7 since 1997. She will continue to be the solo anchor of "News7 at Noon."
Kovar has also worked in television in Sherman, Texas, and has a journalism degree from the University of Texas.
"I was so impressed by the Roanoke Valley and surrounding area and by WDBJ7's legacy of leadership, that this is the perfect fit," Kovar said in the news release.
