Tim Kaine was sworn in shortly after noon Thursday as Virginia’s newest U.S. senator.
After being escorted in the ornate Senate chambers by Sen. Mark Warner and now former Sen. Jim Webb, Kaine stood with his right hand raised before Vice President Joe Biden as he took the oath of office. He and 11 other newly elected lawmakers joined the 100-member governing body.
The opening of the 113th Congress begins a new chapter for Kaine, 54, who already has served as Virginia’s governor and lieutenant governor, and Richmond’s mayor.
