N.Y. man charged after police chase along Interstate 81

A New York man is behind bars following a Sunday morning pursuit that led state police troopers on a 44-mile chase along Interstate 81, authorities said.

Alexander Norman Levine, 24, of Monticello, N.Y., faces single counts of felony elude, reckless driving by speed and driving on a suspended operator’s license.

Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said the chase started at 10:35 a.m. on I-81 south at mile marker 160 in Botetourt County.

A trooper clocked Levine driving a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck at 87 mph in a 70 mph zone, Carpentieri said.

Levine led the trooper through three counties. He finally pulled over for a trooper at mile marker 124 in Montgomery County, Carpentieri said.

Authorities said Levine is being held without bond in the Botetourt County Jail. Roanoke County and Christiansburg police departments assisted the trooper in the pursuit.
