Fleeing driver injures guard in northwest Roanoke

The driver was shot and wounded by a second security guard. Three other people are being sought.

A security guard was struck by a fleeing car in a northwest Roanoke apartment complex early Saturday just before another guard fired a shot into the car, wounding the driver. Three other people in the car later escaped police.

City police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said officers responded to the 3400 block of Bennett Drive at 12:28 a.m. on a report of shots being fired. They arrived to find Jerry David Overstreet, 23, prone at the intersection of 35th Street and Dona Drive. Overstreet, an employee of a private security company that works in the Ashton Heights apartment complex, told police that he had attempted to stop four males who left a residence and got into a vehicle with what appeared to be open containers of alcohol.

Overstreet said that when he tried to stop the vehicle, the driver drove at him and struck him, causing him to go onto the hood and then to the ground.

A second security guard fired once into the vehicle as it continued to flee. A third security guard got into a separate vehicle and followed the suspects. Police located that guard and the suspect vehicle about 10 minutes later at the intersection of Tellico Road and Lynn Street. Three of the vehicle's occupants fled, leaving behind the driver, identified by police as Joshua Tyree Poindexter, 21, of Roanoke. Poindexter had a gunshot wound to his upper body that Johnson said was from the shot fired by the security guard. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Overstreet also was taken to Roanoke Memorial. Neither man was listed as a patient at the hospital on Monday.

The three other suspects from the car have not been located. Police determined that the vehicle struck a mailbox, a tree and a parked vehicle as it fled. Police are still investigating the aggravated assault and have not filed charges.
