Each school year, hundreds of local teachers enhance the learning experiences of thousands of their students by incorporating the daily newspaper into their classroom. The number of teachers hoping to utilize NIE increases each year, and it is only through the generosity of local individuals, businesses and organizations that every teacher can enjoy the resources and support provided by NIE.
Research has shown that on average, students in schools with at least some NIE programs scored 10% better on standardized reading tests than schools with no NIE programs. In schools with a large percentage of low income, minority, or immigrant students, the increase in test scores for those using NIE was as much as 29%. In all cases, the more newspapers used throughout the year, the greater the gain in test scores.
