HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Cave Spring girls advance to Region tourney

CHRISTIANSBURG -- Cave Spring defeated host Christiansburg 49-26 in the first round of the River Ridge District tournament to assure the Knights of their first Region IV girls basketball berth in a decade.

Sophomore forward Cassie Parulis led Cave Spring with 16 points and eight rebounds. Junior post Taylor Asimakopoulos scored nine points and Clair Harkey had six rebounds along with two points.

Christiansburg senior Shannon Stuart had 12 points.

BLACKSBURG -- Freshman Chris Martin went 7-for-14 from the floor to score a game-high 14 points as Blacksburg defeated Pulaski.

Catherine Boyle added eight points and as many rebounds for the Bruins.

Jordan Chrisley scored 13 and Chelsea Golden 11 for the Cougars, who lost nine of their last 10 games.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Zarkia Mattox scored 16 points as Franklin County held on to defeat George Washington.

Mattox made a game-saving rebound in the final seconds of play as Franklin County missed from the foul line with a one point lead.

George Washington outscored Franklin County 26-17 in the final two periods of play after trailing by 10 at the break. Bre Fitzgerald had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Khadijah Wilson scored 15.

The Golden Eagles held Rockbridge to only two field goals in the third quarter as Staunton River extended a two point halftime advantage into a 10-point lead after three quarters of play.

Keely Fresh had 16 points for Rockbridge.

NEW CASTLE -- Melia Hutton sank five of eight fourth quarter free throws and Craig County went 11-for-18 from the stripe that period to pull away from visiting Bath County.

Hutton finished 7-for-10 from the line and was the game's leading scorer with 24 points. She also had 10 rebounds and five steals. Grace Faw chipped in 12.

Mikayla Colaw's 10 points led the Chargers. Bath County lost eight of its last nine games.

LEXINGTON -- Andrew Rowsey became the leading career scorer in Timesland history as the Wildcats defeated Staunton River.

Rowsey went 5-for-11 from 3-point range and finished with a game high 32 points to move past Odell Hodge of Laurel Park on the all-time list. His 2,533 career points are second on the all-time state list

Devonta Branche collected 11 rebounds to go with five points for the Wildcats.

Runir Hunt scored 11 and Tashawn Martin 10 for Staunton River. The Eagles finished the season on a 12-game losing skid.

Michael Ayers and Brandon Walters also had 16 points. Ayers notched a double-double with 15 rebounds. Grayson Shelton finished with 13 for the Bruins.

Lonnie Mattox led Pulaski with 13 points. Tyler Ervine had 12, including three of the Cougars 10 3-point goals.
