Man charged in wreck that killed teen friend
A prosecutor said the state expects to show that Aaron Jayne was driving at more than 100 mph.
A grand jury has charged the driver in a fatal Bedford County traffic crash with aggravated involuntary manslaughter and drunken driving.
Aaron Scott Jayne, 21, of Montvale has been charged in the October death of Lewis Allen Dickenson, 15, of Montvale.
Marion Dickenson, Allen's mother, has said her son went for a car ride with Jayne, a family friend, in Jayne's 1994 Honda Civic. The car ran off the right side of the road, hit an embankment and rolled several times on eastbound U.S. 460 near Villamont Road in Montvale shortly after midnight Oct. 7, according to a police report.
Jayne and Dickenson were ejected. Jayne had serious injuries, while Dickenson died at the scene, according to the report, which said neither was wearing a seat belt.
Bedford County Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney John Wheelock said the state expects to show that Jayne acted with reckless disregard for life by driving at more than 100 mph with evidence that he had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.
The manslaughter charge carries a possible mandatory minimum sentence of one year incarceration and a possible maximum of 20 years, Wheelock said.
Jayne was arrested Friday, held over the weekend and released on a secured $10,000 bond, Wheelock said. Jayne's trial is scheduled for April 9.
